Based in Bristol within the Science Creates St Philips incubator, Carbometrics has established three state-of-the-art labs. Our R&D journey, encompassing sensor development and drug discovery projects (as Ziylo), has allowed us to build a vast range of competencies in-house across various fields of chemistry, including physical, organic, polymer, material, and analytical. The multidisciplinary nature of medical device development has further expanded our expertise to include biochemistry, physics, optoelectronic devices, medical devices, and mechanical engineering. We also have specific experience with surface characterisation (AFM/SEM), sample/device sterilisation, sterile assembly and fluidics
Since our founding in 2018, we have leveraged our in-house expertise and resources to collaborate with other life science businesses, helping them overcome their R&D challenges. Our service offerings are designed to cater to each unique enquiry. Most equipment is rentable by the hour, with the option to include training from our team of experienced scientists and industry experts. Alternatively, our team can perform custom experiments as a service.
Whether you are interested in accessing our equipment and facilities or engaging us for bespoke R&D services, we’d love to hear from you.
Expertise
We have specific and extensive expertise in:
Organic, analytical, materials and polymer chemistry
Bioconjugation and purification of complex molecules (macromolecules, peptides, and oligonucleotides)
Immobilisation of small molecules to surfaces, polymers, and resins
Photo-physical characterisation of fluorophores and phosphors
Studying molecular binding and biophysical interactions through various techniques such as NMR spectroscopy, Isothermal Titration Calorimetry, UV-Visible spectroscopy, and fluorescence
Creation of bespoke binding assays using fluorescence-based and electrochemical-based techniques (FRET and Cyclic Voltammetry)
Accelerated ageing and long-term in vitro testing of molecules and materials designed for in vivo use
See our case studies below for details of some of the projects we have worked on. We look forward to partnering with you to achieve your R&D goals.
Speciality chemicals
Through our pioneering R&D, we have created a number of specialty chemicals and building blocks that have widespread application in in vivo imaging, fluorescence microscopy, medical devices, and therapeutics. For example:
Ultra-Stable Red-Emitting Dyes
We have developed chemically and photophysically stable, water-soluble red-emitting dyes (excitation 620-700 nm, emission >700 nm) that exhibit low protein binding. These dyes are designed for applications requiring long-lasting, reliable fluorescence, making them ideal for advanced imaging techniques.Hydrolytically and Oxidatively Stable Linkers
Our expertise extends to the creation of extremely stable linkers that facilitate efficient and simple bioconjugation to macromolecules. These linkers ensure that dye attachment remains intact, even under harsh hydrolytic or oxidative conditions, providing durability in demanding biomedical environments.Customizable Hydrophilic Polymers
We can offer customizable and reproducible small-batch hydrophilic polymers tailored for biomedical applications. These polymers are ideal for use in medical devices and therapeutic platforms, providing flexibility and precision in research and development.
