Inspiring Young Scientists at Hillcrest Primary School

Carbometrics had the pleasure of visiting Hillcrest Primary School in Bristol recently to support their after-school STEM club. Led by our own Dr. Andrew Chapman, we hosted an engaging hands-on workshop that delved into the fascinating world of chlorophyll and chromatography.

The workshop kicked off with an exciting leaf-collecting adventure in Arnos Vale, where the students gathered a variety of leaves for their experiments. Back in the classroom, donning their lab coats, the young scientists explored the concept of fluorescence and tested the vibrant colors of the collected leaves.

Varous types of green and red leaves arranged on a school classroom table with children's arms in lab coats on the perimeter

Using TLC plates, TLC spotters, filters, and UV light, the students extracted and analyzed the pigments, all while becoming familiar with the scientific tools and techniques.

It was an inspiring session, and we're eager to bring this workshop to many more classrooms in the near future!
