Company Profile

Carbometrics is a specialist chemistry company based in Bristol, UK. Our core competency is the design, synthesis and derivatisation of highly selective and robust carbohydrate-binding molecules. Our mission is to help people with diabetes to live more normal and longer lives. We are using our proprietary Biomimetic Glucose Binding Molecules (GBM) to develop a new glucose sensor chemistry that will enable market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM).

Our technology is based on over 20 years of cutting-edge research, pioneered by Professor Anthony Davis’ group at the University of Bristol (see: Davis et al., Nature Chemistry, 11, 52-56, 2019). Carbometrics’ goal is to exploit our GBM technology to realise a highly robust and accurate glucose sensing platform that can be used to create a market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) solution. The company was set up after the founders sold their first company, Ziylo, to Novo Nordisk, which utilised the same platform to develop glucose-sensitive, or 'smart', insulins. About the role

In the last 12 months, Carbometrics has developed and optimised an assay for the quantitation of glucose in aqueous media and in vivo applications. Attention is now being turned towards the sensing of other analytes of clinical significance. The successful candidate will be using their synthetic chemical, analytical and problem-solving skills to synthesise and modify a variety of molecules ranging from small molecules to larger macromolecules such as functional polymers, proteins and RNA/DNA. To thrive in this role, the candidate must be able to work independently, be adaptable to new ideas and change, be resourceful and self-motivated.

The role is based within our innovative team in Bristol’s only dedicated scientific incubator. Carbometrics is a young, growing company and will offer the successful candidate an interesting and enjoyable work environment with a highly motivated team of scientists plus an opportunity to grow and develop scientific skills and experience.

  • Designing and conducting laboratory experiments in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Synthesis, purification and characterisation of small molecules.

  • Bioconjugation, modification, purification and characterisation of large molecules.

  • Analysing experimental data using the relevant software (e.g. Mnova) and maintain an electronic record of experiments (e.g. Mbook ELN).

  • Using various equipment such as spectrometers (NMR, UV Vis, fluorescence, plate reader), chromatography (Biotage automated flash purification, LCMS, HPLC, size exclusion, GPC), and biophysical techniques such as isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) or surface plasmon resonance (SPR)/bio-layer interferometry (BLI) etc.

  • Contributing to scientific discussions and offering suggestions to push forward new projects.

  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team towards larger objectives.

  • Routinely present scientific data and results in a clear and concise manner, as well as communicating these effectively to the rest of the team.
